With Politess® Fly, an innovative solution for modern traffic enforcement and hazard prevention in urban areas is introduced. The new application combines drone technology, digital processes, and intelligent data analysis into an efficient overall system—specifically developed for immediate deployment in visual line-of-sight operations (VLOS).
The system is already approved for operation in North Rhine-Westphalia—including over tram infrastructure—and has been successfully tested in daytime operations. Extensions for evening and nighttime use are currently in the testing phase.
Rethinking Efficiency
Politess® Fly enables fast, precise, and legally compliant detection of traffic violations—especially in cases of acute hazards, such as illegal stopping in absolute no-stopping zones on bicycle lanes. The drone operates at an altitude of around 80 meters with a vertical perspective, capturing vehicles with centimeter-level accuracy. High-resolution images are taken every 18 meters with overlap, generating multiple pieces of evidence per vehicle—efficiently at a speed of approximately 5 m/s.
Through direct data transmission, relevant information is processed in real time and forwarded to connected systems. Towing measures can be initiated immediately—without requiring personnel to be physically present on site.
Seamless Digital Integration
A key element of Politess® Fly is the digital networking of all stakeholders:
- Automated forwarding of violations to towing companies
- Confirmation app for license plate capture and documentation
- Direct communication with the Politess server
- Automated creation of administrative offense proceedings
- Planned: Optional integration into existing systems such as Politess® Go with Pay-by-Space and Politess® Fly
Evidence is secured comprehensively and transparently through the combination of drone imagery, towing documentation, and logging by pilots and enforcement personnel.
Data Protection and Legal Compliance
Politess® Fly was developed from the outset with data protection requirements in mind. Due to the vertical camera perspective and targeted data capture, uninvolved individuals are not identifiable in the images. There is no blanket pre-surveillance; deployment is strictly event-driven and sporadic.
Innovation Through Development
Patent applications have already been filed for key components of the solution. Immediate deployment in VLOS operations allows municipalities and authorities to benefit from the technology without having to wait for future BVLOS approvals.
Outlook
In the initial development stage, the focus is on consistent enforcement of towing measures in absolute no-stopping zones—particularly on bicycle lanes where significant hazards arise. Looking ahead, the system will be further developed, especially through the integration of additional functions within the Politess platform.
Politess® Fly represents a new dimension in traffic enforcement: precise, digitally connected, and ready for immediate use.
